Rough Start

As I sit back and try to detangle to workouts and training plans in my head and trying to figure out sometime of schedule. I realize how much work it is to do triathlons. Yes, for the newbie doing his/her first few tris you sorta get a pass. Its more of a trial by fire approach but once you have some under your belt you get a sense of where you need to distribute your energy. There are several philosophies to follow on running, swimming and biking. There are several dos and don'ts, that more so than not, contradict each other. There are different nutrition plans, supplements, and race fuel. There is new gear coming out that will be faster, lighter and more expensive. There is the decision to invest into anew faster tri bike or to upgrade the components and wheel set on my existing one. These are only a few consideration and the task seem daunting. Most people love this and find it exciting but until I am a Pro triathlete I just want some one to help simplify the whole deal. The trial and error process of triathlon is taking to much out of why i like to do it.

So if you couldn't tell I am a bit frustrated with the whole process at this point and the problem is that its definitely a process. The tribaby also adds another dimension to the whole mix (I wouldn't trade her for the world or a new Guru bike). There is the issue with my work compute (a hour + each way), there is a issue w/sleep and feedings for Tribaby, there is lack of motivation issue when working on my lunch break, there is the issue with trying to get to the pool early and how to performed sleep deprived, there is the issue of joining up with the running club after work and try to keep up with them for 6 miles, there is the issue of scheduling races with summer packed races, etc, etc. I am sure this is a common occurrence for most triathlete who have had to take off after a injury or a overall respit. However, this time its not coming to me as easy as before.

What am I doing to get some traction?
  • Finally decided on one online training app, TrainingPeaks
  • Upgrading some of my equipment and selling the old stuff
  • Make use of what I have and don't buy the latest gear
  • Not experimenting with tons of different supplements
  • Keeping to the nutrition plan that was layed out for me before and try not to tweek it
  • Bought a organizer to write out workout days
  • Scaling down the number of races and difficulty of them
  • Decrease amount of showers and use ActionWipes instead
  • Keep a pair of running shoes in the car at all times
  • Bring workout bag to work everyday
  • Listen to podcast and record tricast during commute
  • Learn how to work on my bike myself
  • Put off reading TRi magazine and use that time to workout
  • Take a more relaxed approach to training
  • Hire a coach to look over and crunch all the HR numbers
  • Purchase only necessary TriGear
  • Decided to raise money for charity to help keep motivated
  • No more TV after hockey season is over (Friday)
  • Train and run my own way and don't compare myself or be competitive with others
Those are only a few things I am looking at changing to help the process. Its like riding a bike, its tricky at first but once your up and steady you are golden

On a sadder note, I fell off the no- caffeine wagon and grabbed a diet Pepsi. I was so tired I need something to jump start me...and it didn't work and tasted like shit. Water is a better option I have decided. And the worst part of the morning is that i ran over a chipmunk with my car. UsuallyI  try and brake or swerve but my lack of sleep rendered my reaction time inactive. I feel horrible and decided to blame the caffeine. It just sucks and I fell real bad. I hope he is running around and eating lots of nuts in Chipmunk heaven.

I hope your day is full of success and joy. Remember a smile can change someones life

Pirates come to disappoint again

I have grown up without a baseball team...at least a good baseball team. I didn't got to many games as a kid b/c they weren't good. I remember always being jealous of my cousin from Cincinnati. The Reds were good in the late 80s and 90s will at least they were competitive and fun to watch. My cousin and I would always get in arguments about who's team was better and my brother and I always fell short and accepted defeat. This conversation happened for years on end and we always lost. The Reds were a great team and it funny that I can name more guys from the Reds(Barry Larkin) than I came name from the Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirate play in one of the nations most beautiful parks but is one of the worst and least winning team in MLB and soon sports history. If the 'Rats' have another losing season this year (under .500), which is looking to be the case, they will be the most losingist franchise in sports history. Yes, I said sports history not only are they the worst in the MLB but also in the entire world of sport no other team has done this.

The blame clearly rest on the shoulders of the owners, The Nuttings. They are business people only and not baseball enthusiast. Regardless if the bucs are winning or losing they are making money. And as a small market team they don't see it necessary to compete for the amount of money you have to invest. So they are content at sucking the lower amount of revenue and not having to dish out anything else. Another thing is that The Nuttings don't even live in Pittsburgh or even Pennsylvania. They live in West Virginia so the greater amount of tax income from their frivolous spending isn't even spent in PA. So the little money The Nuttings spend goes into marketing and PR to entice fans to come to the park. If they would fore go bobblehead and fireworks night and invest in some good pitching and bat maybe we would suck so hard. Being in the realm of business, I understand why they are doing it b/c regardless if they are awesome or suck they still make money and to invest in a team with a uncertain ROI (spending money doesn't equal championship or great merchandise and ticket sales) is not business savvy. However I think they owe the tax payers something for building them the new field which has contributed to increase revenues.

Lets face it the Pirate are the worst managed team in baseball and stupidity run rampant. The Pittsburgh Pirate of  today are a disgrace and insult to the Pirate of yesteryear.
In another bonehead move, I found out today that yesterday 'our bucos' decided to trade their All Star 2008 Golden Glove top player, Nate McLouth, to Atlanta for a bunch of scrubs...2 minor league pitchers and a outfield. Stop the insanity

I need to go for a run and Lets go Sox and Cubbys (  I have to cheer for someone)

Last thought, I feel bad for the players. They are really trying hard and most a great guys and o alot for the community. I feel bad that they are treated worse than Michael Vicks dogs.

Root Canal and the battle with my yard

So for those who have been following my tweets, my mouth has been a cesspool for evil bacteria due to a botched root canal i had over 5 years ago all week long. Too much drinking in college most likely the culprit of the initial canal but I am now more responsible and adult-like...well i don't drink as much as I did back then. Anyways my mouth has swollen up so bad that it affected my speech as well as make me look like a world series slugger with a pound of Big Red in his left gum...pleasant imagery huh. After a few days of suffering with the aid of some heavy doses of penicillin and 500mg of Motrin. I was able to grab a appointment today to have my mouth and head jack hammered into.

I had to go to a specialist to have it reroot canaled out. Lots of fun. Thank fully they provided nifty sun glasses to block the glare of their lamp and I was able to listen to my ipod while the whole thing was going on. So i also gave me a opportunity to catch on some podcast like Zen Tri and Stay Tuned Report. Great cast check them out.

Now, I never was fond of the dentist but my latest dentist has changed my whole perspective on the industry. Like chiropractors there are so really good one and then there are hacks. I hacked it up from my early year until my mid 20s. Now I am all smiles with my current one...yeah I know its cheesy but give me a break I am running on a few hours of sleep. Anyway, I figured I would give this specialist a shot b/c my dentist recommended him. I am glad I listened. He shot me up with enough novicain that you could have it me in the face with a mallet and i wouldn't have felt anything. He was so good that I actually fell asleep for a second while he was drilling...yeah he was that good. Everything was over in a mere hour and a half and I was on my way.
I still have to make another appointment to get a the old crown removed and a newone place on. All in all about 5 ours in the hair but at least I don't feel like a squirrel carrying one to many acorns in his cheek.

As for training, I am revising a schedule and hopefully get to ride this weekend and hope I can get more time in the pool as well.

I did get a workout somewhat yesterday push my old lawnmower over the foot high grassland i call my yard. I haven't been able to sculp it down for at least 2 weeks and the neighbors started to wonder if we had moved. It was a heck of a workout b/c I live on a riduclous hill and realized i have alot of work to do to salvage this years tri season but you gotta start somewhere. It just felt good to sweat.

Keep stayingtunes the new episode of the TrGuinness Tricast will be out soon!

Have a great day of training or rest. Slainte

Welcoming the new tribaby

Well for those of you who haven't heard my wife and I recently welcome our new tribaby into the world. She is wonderful and mom is doing well. Its definitely an adjustment for not only for tricasting and working out, its a life adjustment. So you may see some change in the upcoming weeks with the show release or regularity. Once life settles down a bit

We have been sleeping but only in 2 to 3 hour segments which is pretty good forher but add a 10 hour workday and house work...your not really left with much time on your hands but its should losen up soon or later. We have to adjust with her.

On a seperate note, I am working on the latest show to be launched hopefully this week. I have a stellar interview with Dane Rauschenberg,  Runner / Motivational Speaker who in 2006 registered a marathon a week. He is a  great guy, wonderful personality and a pleasure to speak with. Check him out at http://danerunsalot2.blogspot.com/ and pick up a copy of his book "See Dane Run". Can't wait for you guys to here this interview.

Final note I am revising my workout schedule again and looking to possibly hire on a coach to get me back into some type of competition. I have a meetup with swim coach to hopefully get my technigue and runners kick straighten out. I got some new gear to try out and review. And i finally am getting my orthodics adjusted so i can start over compensating for my foot roolout (supination for the clinical geeks)

Looking forward to a new breath of life with my new family and hopefully keep you guys informed along the way. Thanks for listening and Keep Tri-ing
