I have grown up without a baseball team...at least a good baseball team. I didn't got to many games as a kid b/c they weren't good. I remember always being jealous of my cousin from Cincinnati. The Reds were good in the late 80s and 90s will at least they were competitive and fun to watch. My cousin and I would always get in arguments about who's team was better and my brother and I always fell short and accepted defeat. This conversation happened for years on end and we always lost. The Reds were a great team and it funny that I can name more guys from the Reds(Barry Larkin) than I came name from the Pirates
The Pittsburgh Pirate play in one of the nations most beautiful parks but is one of the worst and least winning team in MLB and soon sports history. If the 'Rats' have another losing season this year (under .500), which is looking to be the case, they will be the most losingist franchise in sports history. Yes, I said sports history not only are they the worst in the MLB but also in the entire world of sport no other team has done this.
The blame clearly rest on the shoulders of the owners, The Nuttings. They are business people only and not baseball enthusiast. Regardless if the bucs are winning or losing they are making money. And as a small market team they don't see it necessary to compete for the amount of money you have to invest. So they are content at sucking the lower amount of revenue and not having to dish out anything else. Another thing is that The Nuttings don't even live in Pittsburgh or even Pennsylvania. They live in West Virginia so the greater amount of tax income from their frivolous spending isn't even spent in PA. So the little money The Nuttings spend goes into marketing and PR to entice fans to come to the park. If they would fore go bobblehead and fireworks night and invest in some good pitching and bat maybe we would suck so hard. Being in the realm of business, I understand why they are doing it b/c regardless if they are awesome or suck they still make money and to invest in a team with a uncertain ROI (spending money doesn't equal championship or great merchandise and ticket sales) is not business savvy. However I think they owe the tax payers something for building them the new field which has contributed to increase revenues.
Lets face it the Pirate are the worst managed team in baseball and stupidity run rampant. The Pittsburgh Pirate of today are a disgrace and insult to the Pirate of yesteryear.
In another bonehead move, I found out today that yesterday 'our bucos' decided to trade their All Star 2008 Golden Glove top player, Nate McLouth, to Atlanta for a bunch of scrubs...2 minor league pitchers and a outfield. Stop the insanity

I need to go for a run and Lets go Sox and Cubbys ( I have to cheer for someone)
Last thought, I feel bad for the players. They are really trying hard and most a great guys and o alot for the community. I feel bad that they are treated worse than Michael Vicks dogs.
